Friends and family tend to ask me what I recommend for various elements in web marketing – blogging, emailing, software, cameras, microphones… all that geeky stuff.
I keep recommending the same things over and over again, so I thought it might be helpful to create a Resources page where I can give you all the details on all the stuff that I use and recommend.
Absolutely, for sure, positively, 100%, without a doubt, use WordPress. And what I mean by that is you should run WordPress, self-hosted, on a server (web host) of your choosing. WordPress is completely free, but you will have to pay for a domain name and hosting (more on that in a second). When I talk about WordPress I am not talking about setting up an account at wordpress.com, which is a network of other people’s blogs. We’re talking about your website, your blog, that you have control over and can rock the internet with your content.
As far as WordPress themes, I highly recommend Divi WordPress Theme from Elegant Themes. Elegant Themes also has some really great plugins included in the price of their theme package. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Both vidpromom.com and myfingerlakesny.com run on Divi.
To purchase a domain name, which will run you around $10-12 per year, Name Cheap is the way to go. GoDaddy is the last place you should go.
Let’s talk about email. ConvertKit has been rocking my socks off lately and I’m super impressed. If you are considering MailChimp (which is fine) or Aweber (never used it), do yourself a big favor and avoid a few headaches by just going with ConvertKit. Seriously… it’s awesome.
I use FreshBooks for invoicing, tracking income and tracking expenses. So on top of being able to invoice my clients, I also enter my income (affiliate income, client income, ad income, etc.) and also my expenses. Come tax time… it’s a Godsend.
This post contains affiliate links, which means I get a tiny kickback if you signup after clicking on my links. Thanks for that!
